How it works
Taxes on a car imported into Spain
IEDMT (impuesto de matriculación), Modelo 576
Spain charges a one-off registration tax (IEDMT, Modelo 576) when a car is first registered there, by its official CO₂: 0% up to 120 g/km and for electric cars, 4.75% above 120 and below 160, 9.75% from 160 to below 200, 14.75% from 200 g/km. Asturias, the Balearics, Catalonia and Valencia charge 16% in the top band, Murcia 15.9% and Cantabria 15%.
For a used import the tax is not charged on the price paid but on the Spanish market value. Most importers use the Ministry of Finance tables: the value of the exact model new (Orden HAC/1501/2025, Annex I) × an age percentage (84% after one year down to 10% after twelve), divided by 1 + the VAT and registration-tax rates that applied when the car was first registered. Then come the ITV inspection, the DGT registration fee (€99.77) and plates. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla have their own rules and are not covered.
Which taxes apply when importing a used car into Spain?

Is VAT due in Spain on an imported used car?
A car that is used for VAT purposes, bought from a dealer under the margin scheme or from a private seller in another EU country, carries no VAT again in Spain. If VAT is shown separately, a VAT-registered buyer can buy without the origin country's VAT and account for VAT at the destination. For a used car under normal VAT rules, a private buyer collecting it abroad generally pays the seller-country VAT. Seller-arranged delivery can change the VAT treatment; confirm the invoice and delivery arrangements. A car first used six months ago or less, or driven 6,000 km or less, is a new means of transport for VAT and is taxed at 21% in the destination country, whoever buys it.
Is the result an official tax assessment?
The import calculator gives an estimate from published tax tables and the details you enter, with the legal basis for each tax line. The tax authority decides the amount due; official simulators are linked below where available.
