Have a Dutch number plate? Fill in the vehicle details. From the official RDW register: first registration, fuel, CO₂ and engine size.

We use the plate only for this lookup.

First registration
First registration anywhere: it sets the car’s age for the tax tables.
On the registration certificate (field V.7) or the listing.
Maximum net power on the certificate of conformity (field 27) or the registration document (P.2). 1 hp ≈ 0.7355 kW.

In short

Belgium's registration tax depends on the region where the owner lives. Flanders (BIV) uses an environmental formula on CO₂, fuel and Euro norm, reduced by the car's age in months down to 10%, between €58.16 and €14,539.31; electric cars pay €61.50. For scale, the median dealer asking price for a used car in Belgium on 3 Nov 2026 was €20,900, across 2,902 cars. Tax rules in force on 4 Nov 2026; an estimate, not a tax assessment.

How it works

Taxes on a car imported into Belgium

BIV (Flanders) / TMC (Wallonia, Brussels)

Belgium's registration tax depends on the region where the owner lives. Flanders (BIV) uses an environmental formula on CO₂, fuel and Euro norm, reduced by the car's age in months down to 10%, between €58.16 and €14,539.31; electric cars pay €61.50. Wallonia (TMC, reformed in 2025) multiplies a base by power (kW), reduced by age, by the car's CO₂ (÷136 WLTP), its maximum authorised mass (÷1,838) and an energy factor (hybrids 0.8, electric 0.01–0.26), between €50 and €9,000. Brussels charges a base by power bracket, reduced by age, at least €78.88.

Then come the inspection before registration (with Car-Pass, about €90–100), the DIV registration and rear plate (€30) and a front plate. Rates are indexed every 1 July.

Is VAT due in Belgium on an imported used car?

A car that is used for VAT purposes, bought from a dealer under the margin scheme or from a private seller in another EU country, carries no VAT again in Belgium. If VAT is shown separately, a VAT-registered buyer can buy without the origin country's VAT and account for VAT at the destination. For a used car under normal VAT rules, a private buyer collecting it abroad generally pays the seller-country VAT. Seller-arranged delivery can change the VAT treatment; confirm the invoice and delivery arrangements. A car first used six months ago or less, or driven 6,000 km or less, is a new means of transport for VAT and is taxed at 21% in the destination country, whoever buys it.

Is the result an official tax assessment?

The import calculator gives an estimate from published tax tables and the details you enter, with the legal basis for each tax line. The tax authority decides the amount due; official simulators are linked below where available.
